A flower crown for Beltane, knitted pumpkins for Samhain, rowan berry garland for Yule, a macramé hanging jar for Imbolc: two writers across two continents have come together to create a guide through the seasons with utilitarian artistry at the center of the wheel.
"Crafting the Wheel of the Year" by Claire Gelder and Wilmington local Deb Bowen encourages the reader to embrace various colors and elements to honor the seasons. I had the opportunity to sit down with co-author Deb Bowen to discuss the work.

Bowen grew up on a barrier island with a father who understood how vital connection to nature is to humanity and a good life. Being raised this way, Bowen guides herself to a life with respect for all beings as the foundation. Similar beliefs led her to collaborate with expert crafter Claire Gelder to bring the Celtic Wheel of the Year to life in a refreshing way. In agrarian cultures, people lived with the land and saw no distinction between craft and art. Bowen and Gelder hoped to embody that mindset throughout the four seasons of crafting.
Taking the time to connect with natural cycles and to honor seasonal rituals is meaningful in today’s fast-paced world, Bowen says, “I can’t imagine a moment when we don’t need this. Mother Earth is all we have. There’s no hierarchy of beings—we’re all part of the same great circle, and it’s cyclical. That’s the gift.”
With 144 pages of inspiration, this book is a perfect companion for those seeking to deepen their connection with nature and infuse their crafting with intention and mindfulness. You can swing by Pomegranate Books anytime for your copy, or meet Bowen there on September 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
