MERCURY RETROGRADE & OTHER EXCUSES: The cave has a door, Bestie, come back out before the 'Hermit Era' becomes permanent

Hi there besties,

It's me. Seph. And look, I need to tell you something a little embarrassing before we get into the actual reading, which is that I pulled the cards for this month, saw what came up, and audibly said "oh come ON" to an empty room.

Because last issue I made this whole joke about my hermit era. Sacred archetype, seeker in the cave, wise soul returning with truth, very cute narrative, very flattering to me. And this month? The cards looked me dead in the eye and said "about that."

And before your brain goes "well OF COURSE that's what came up, Seph literally just wrote a whole column about hiding in a cave, this reading is just about her"— no. Stop that. Cognitive dissonance abyss, table for one, reservation cancelled. This is a collective reading. I am not pulling cards about my own personal arc and calling it a magazine column. I just happen to be a very convenient, very public example of a pattern that's showing up across the whole collective right now, which, fine, tracks. The universe has a sense of humor and questionable timing. But I am not the only one who's been in that cave. If it landed for me, it landed for a lot of you too — so don't you dare read this as "ha, that's Seph's thing" and close the tab feeling let off the hook.

We're going to get into it. But first, the sky. And bestie, I'm just going to say it up front: the sky is a lot this month. Buckle in.

What's Actually Happening Up There (Deep Breath)

September is not a gentle month, and I don't think it's doing anyone a favor to pretend otherwise. Saturn moves into Pisces on the 1st, which is the planet of structure and accountability walking straight into the sign of dreams, spirituality, and everything unmeasurable — its whole job right now is to take the vague, floaty stuff you've been "manifesting" and start asking you to actually build something out of it. Mercury lands in Virgo the next day, sharpening your thinking whether you're ready or not. On the 5th, Uranus stations retrograde in Gemini, which means the disruption that's been rewriting how we talk and tell our stories stops moving fast and forward and starts turning inward instead. Less breakthrough, more reckoning. The Full Moon in Pisces on the 7th cracks open whatever emotional truth you've been keeping tidy on the surface. The New Moon in Virgo on the 21st hands you a clean, practical slate to actually organize what that Full Moon shook loose. And then, almost on top of each other on the 22nd, Mars marches into Scorpio right as the Sun crosses into Libra for the equinox—intensity and focus colliding directly with balance and fairness, on the exact same day.

That is a genuinely heavy stack of transits. If you feel like you're being asked to hold five things at once—grieve, build, speak, rest, act—that's not you being dramatic. That's actually what's happening up there. I'm not going to cheerlead you past that part. We hold space over here, okay?

Which brings us to the cards, because they know it, too.

Inner Integration and Confusion: The Oracle Names the Whole Problem

I pulled two from the Lantern Oracle to set the theme, and they came out as a pair that felt almost rude in how accurately they described the sky I just described to you.

Inner Integration. Confusion.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about a month this stacked: you don't get one clean lesson, you get several at once, and they don't arrive in order. Saturn in Pisces is asking you to give structure to something that's still half-formed. The Full Moon in Pisces is asking you to feel something you haven't fully looked at yet. Uranus retrograde in Gemini is asking you to sit with a story instead of reacting to it. That's not one task. That's several unfinished ones happening simultaneously, and the oracle is naming exactly what that feels like from the inside: not clarity, not a breakthrough — confusion, with integration working quietly underneath it whether it feels productive or not.

You're not behind. You're mid-assembly, and the manual arrived in three different languages this month.

Your prompt: Name one thing you're currently trying to hold together that hasn't clicked into place yet. Don't force a conclusion. Just name the mid-assembly thing.

The Tarot: Five Cards, Five Jobs, Nothing Random

Now, normally I do a clean three-card pull. This month a fourth card insisted on joining, and then a fifth practically shoved its way in. I've learned by now not to argue with a deck that has opinions. Here's what we've got, in order: The Fool. The Ten of Swords. The Ten of Wands. The Ten of Pentacles. The Hermit, reversed. Every single one of these showed up on purpose, tied to a specific piece of what's happening overhead, so let's take them one at a time.

The Fool. This one opens the spread, and it's doing the New Moon in Virgo's work — that clean, practical reset point on the 21st. The Fool is the first step before you can see the whole staircase, the willingness to walk into a fresh cycle a little unprepared. It showed up first because the New Moon isn't asking you to have a five-year plan. It's asking you to take the one small, slightly nervous first step and trust the ground shows up under you. That's it. That's the job.

The Ten of Swords. This is the Full Moon in Pisces doing its work — the emotional truth-cracking from the 7th, landed directly on the card of a mental ending. The Ten of Swords isn't the spiral itself; it's confirmation that the spiral already finished. This card is a direct callback to the Nine of Swords reversed from last issue, which told you the worst of the fear-based hiding was starting to lift. Well, under this Full Moon, it lifts the rest of the way. Whatever thought loop has been running since last month, the Pisces Full Moon is the release valve, and the Ten of Swords is proof the pressure's finally out.

The Ten of Wands. Here's the one that's honestly just telling the truth about this month: it's heavy. Saturn walking into Pisces, Uranus turning retrograde, a Full Moon, a New Moon, Mars and the equinox landing on the same day — that's a lot of sky to carry, and the Ten of Wands showed up specifically to name that weight instead of pretending it isn't there. This card isn't punishing you for feeling stretched thin. It's validating it, and it's also telling you where the relief comes from: not from doing more, but from setting down whatever you've been carrying out of habit rather than necessity. Saturn wants structure, not martyrdom.

The Ten of Pentacles. This is Saturn in Pisces again, but the constructive side of it — the part of that transit that's actually good news. Saturn's whole task in Pisces is turning dreams into durable structures, and the Ten of Pentacles is what that structure looks like once it's actually holding weight. Not flashy, not dramatic, just solid. This card showed up to tell you that some of what's forming right now under Saturn's watch isn't a burden at all. It's a foundation. Quietly, unglamorously load-bearing.

Three different Tens, three different jobs — a mental release, an honest accounting of the weight, and a foundation finally setting. And since 10 reduces to 1 in numerology, that's a very unsubtle 111 sitting right in the center of the spread. A triple ignition of ‘1,’ the universe striking the same match again and again until the new path glows through the smoke of the old one. Three separate things ending at once, all of them opening onto the same fresh cycle the Fool already stepped into.

The Hermit, reversed. Bringing up the rear like it followed me here on purpose. And it's doing Uranus retrograde in Gemini's work specifically. Upright, the Hermit is the wise one in the cave, exactly the archetype I was joking about last issue. Reversed and paired with a planet that's turning inward instead of moving forward. It's a warning about a very specific trap: mistaking the inward turn for a permanent address. Uranus retrograde wants reflection, not disappearance. This card showed up last, after all the good news of the Tens and the fresh start of the Fool, because it's the one thing standing between "I integrated something real this month" and "I integrated something real and then never told anyone." Don't let the second one happen.

Putting It Together

Here's the full shape. Sky and cards together. Saturn in Pisces wants you to build real structure out of something that used to just be a feeling. The Full Moon in Pisces already cracked the emotional ending open — the Ten of Swords confirms it's done. The sheer weight of this month is real, named honestly by the Ten of Wands, and Saturn's answer to that weight is the quiet foundation of the Ten of Pentacles, not more carrying. The New Moon in Virgo, through the Fool, hands you a clean first step. And Uranus retrograde in Gemini, through the Hermit reversed, is the one warning in the whole spread: reflect, don't vanish.

Then, right at the equinox, Mars marches into Scorpio the same day the Sun crosses into Libra — intensity and balance arriving together on purpose. That's not a contradiction. That's the instruction. Act with focus (Mars in Scorpio), but act toward balance, not toward disappearing into either extreme (Sun in Libra). Integration isn't passive, and it isn't reckless. It's a deliberate, focused step back into your own life.

Real Talk

Here's what I actually think this month is asking of us: hold the honesty that it's a lot — genuinely, structurally a lot, planet after planet — without using that heaviness as a reason to stay folded up in the corner of it. The Ten of Wands already validated the weight. You don't have to prove it further by disappearing under it.

Three questions for you this month:

  • What ending has the Full Moon in Pisces already confirmed, that I just haven't said out loud yet?

  • Where is Saturn asking me to build real structure instead of just wishing something into place?

  • What's the one Libra-balanced, Scorpio-focused step I can take before the next issue lands — not everything, just the next inch?

Then take it.

The cave will still be there if you need it again. That's what caves are for. But under this particular sky, with this particular deck, it is not, and was never supposed to be, where you live.

Come out, come out, wherever you've actually been hiding this time. Yes, I'm talking to myself too.

Love you deeply and dearly, Seph

P.S. If you read this whole thing nodding along about your own cave and only clocked my hermit joke as, like, a cute framing device? Good. That means you were actually listening to the collective part and not just watching me narrate myself. That's the whole point. xoxo.
