PRESS RELEASE

On September 8, 2026, the Leland Cultural Arts Center will open WE WERE HERE, a solo
exhibition by local artist Kennedy B. Holley. The exhibition will be on view through
September 30, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 10 from 6–8 PM. The
exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
WE WERE HERE grew out of Holley’s observations of her immediate environment after
moving to Leland in 2025. The paintings document litter and discarded objects
encountered around her neighborhood and during everyday errands, looking at these
objects as quiet records of human presence and the lives of the people who left them
behind.
“I’ve begun to learn about my neighbors through the trash scattered around the
neighborhood,” Holley says. “These objects are evidence of their presence.”
Kennedy B. Holley is a painter and visual artist originally from Memphis, Tennessee and
currently based in Leland, North Carolina. She earned her BFA in Studio Art with a
concentration in Painting from the University of Memphis in 2021. Her practice centers on
discarded objects, litter and the quiet evidence of human presence within the
environment.
